Basic provisions
- 1 / The Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava 2025 (BIB 2025) will take place between October 3, 2025 and January 13, 2026 in Bratislava, Slovak Republic.
- 2 / The BIB organizers in respective countries as well as international artists will obtain the Statute and Organization Order BIB 2025 and Questionnaire from the organizer of BIB 2025 by November 30, 2024 at the latest. The deadline for returning completed questionnaires to the organizer is 31 January 2025.
Participation in the BIB 2025
- 3 / Application forms, books and illustrations to the BIB 2025 should be sent to organizer's address: BIBIANA, the International House of Art for Children, BIB Secretariat, Panská street 41, 815 39 Bratislava, Slovak Republic.
- 4 / The application forms for BIB 2025 must be in Bratislava by April 30, 2025 (by e-mail or post). All books containing the selected illustrations shall be delivered in Bratislava by May 31, 2025. Illustrations selected for the contest shall be marked. Each country can only enter a maximum of 10 participants. Each participant can enter a maximum of 10 illustrations which are from a maximum of two books. Sending one copy of the book, from which the selected illustrations are, is required by BIB as a condition of participation in the BIB competition. The second copy (not compulsory) of the book is sent for the purpose of exhibiting all books for the public during the BIB 2025. One copy of each book will be available to the public during the entire BIB exhibition in the BIB exhibition premises. BIB organizers in respective countries are responsible for making sure that artists entering the contest are nationals of their respective countries. Artists shall submit their completed entry form filled in by computer or block letters and personally signed by hand to BIB 2025 by the deadline. Entry forms sent by electronic mail shall be signed, scanned and then mailed by snail mail to BIBIANA. Book titles in the entry form shall be in both the original language, transcribed in the Latin alphabet, and in the English language. The entry form is a supporting document for publication of the BIB 2025 catalogue.
- 5 / The sender of the originals of the illustrations and books will send them to the organizer at his own expense. They also provide customs and insurance on they own expense. The organizer covers the costs of insurance coverage of all illustrations from a forwarder up to their handover to a forwarder for return shipping. The BIB 2025 organizer will, at his own expense, arrange the shipment and insurance of all returning illustrations.
Every shipment of original works and books shall include a declaration of their value, namely a QUOTATION – PROFOMA INVOICE /SYMBOLICAL AMOUNT/ intended for customs and not for commercial purposes. By returning illustrations and catalogues, recipient of illustrations in each country is responsible for the customs clearance. This does not apply to submissions from EU member states, including Slovakia, which are under the scope of the Community Customs Code and free movement of goods
- 6/ Each illustration must be an original work with the respective section of the entry form with the required data attached to its reverse side. BIB is an international competition of original illustrations created mainly in classical media (created by hand in ways such as drawing, painting, graphics) or in new media and mixed media. In the case of new media and mixed media (digital and combined illustrations) authorized, signed prints are also accepted as originals (however, only if the digital medium is the main technique of implementation). Illustrations are to be sent without passe-partouts or frames. Submitting illustrations just on various (electronic) carriers or by electronic mail is not permissible. All illustrations for BIB 2025 must be in Bratislava by 31st of May 2025. Submissions delivered after that deadline will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender at her/his cost. In addition to the original illustration, please also provide us with a digital version suitable for printing in Catalogue BIB 2025.
- 7/ Artists participating in BIB for the first time can select their book illustrations from their previous five years’ period. Artists who have participated in the contest previously can only submit works published in books in 2023 –- 2025 for BIB 2025.
- 8 / By participating in BIB, artists give their consent to make their submitted illustrations available free of charge to be filmed and published for BIB promotion, and be reproduced in theoretical documentary materials, print and electronic media and other print materials including stamps, posters and postcards. The same applies for publishing illustrations on the web sites of BIBIANA. The BIB Secretariat is authorized to exhibit reproductions of original works and the originals of illustrations from property of the BIB Gallery.
- 9 / The artist agrees with the exhibition of her/his submitted illustrations in October 2025 – January 2026 at BIB 2025. Each participating illustrator is entitled to two exhibition spaces 80 x 90 cm. The decision concerning how many and how extra-sized illustrations will be exhibited is made by the BIB Executive Committee. The artist agrees with the publication of his data contained in the application form in BIB 2025 Catalogue, also agrees with the publication of personal data in accordance with the GDPR.
- 10 / BIB organizers are not liable for any damage to illustrations during the exhibition that occur as a result of light effects due to use of unstable colors or paper and that occur due to an inadequate surface finish of the illustration. The organizers are not liable for any possible damage to relief illustrations or glued plastic fragments. The organizers are not liable for any damage that occurs during transportation due to inadequate packaging.
Activities of BIB bodies and staff
- 11 / The Chairman convenes the sessions of the BIB International Committee once
in two years. The BIB Executive Committee and BIB Secretariat submit a report to the BIB International Committee concerning the preparation works of the BIB 2025.
- 12 / The BIB International Jury is composed of members proposed by the BIB organizers the BIB Executive Committee sets up its number and composition. If the organizers from respective countries nominate the previous year’s Grand Prix winner as a member of the International Jury, the BIB Executive Committee appoints the winner to serve as an International Jury member. The Jury decides by more than a half majority of votes of its members present and at equal number of votes, the Chairman’s vote decides. In the case that a member of the BIB International Jury exhibits his works, he withdraws from the competition. The Chairman of the BIB International Jury submits the information on results of the competition part of the BIB 2025 to the BIB International Committee.
- 13 / The mayor of the capital city of Slovakia awards the PRIZE OF THE MAYOR OF BRATISLAVA to a Slovak illustrator participating in the BIB international contest.
The Mayor's award includes a 1,000 EUR prize.
- 14 / The Children’s Jury, whose composition is approved by the BIB Executive Committee, grant its award.
- 15 / The resource center for illustration research is the BIB Secretariat, the BIBIANA Informatics, Documentation Centre and Library and the Dušan Roll Gallery.
- 16 / Dušan Roll Gallery is an integral part of BIBIANA that acquires the original illustrations by purchase or as a gift from the artists and from the BIB-UNESCO workshops of Albín Brunovský, and organizes exhibitions of the collected art.
- 17 / The BIB Secretariat prepares and publishes the BIB 2025 Catalogue and a book of proceedings from the International symposium BIB 2025 and the publication about the awarded illustrators BIB 2025 in cooperation with the BIB Commissioner General.
- 18 / The BIB languages are English, French, German, Russian, Spanish and Slovak.
- 19 / Working stay of members of the International Committee BIB 2025, International Jury BIB 2025, International Symposium BIB 2025 and International BIB-UNESCO Workshop of Albín Brunovský 2025 is paid for by the organizer, which is BIBIANA, the International House of Art for Children, from the allocated financial contribution.
Final provisions
- 20 / All illustrations delivered to BIB 2025 will be shipped back to the specified addresses no later than four months after the conclusion of BIB at the cost of the BIB organizer. Every BIB co-organizer abroad and artist whose illustrations were exhibited at BIB 2025 is entitled to obtain one BIB Catalogue.
- 21 / All books delivered to the BIB 2025 organizer become the property of BIBIANA and are available to the expert public for study purposes in the BIBIANA library. The BIB 2025 awarded illustrators, in cooperation with their publishers, provide two copies of the books to the BIBIANA library for study and promotional purposes.
